Repairing Viper Fang 24T Charging Fault at Discount Retailer in Newcastle

On this occasion our service team received a call from a representative of a retail store concerning an apparent charging fault with their Viper floor cleaning machine which was not charging. The store was based in Newcastle which I'm sure your aware is a large city situated on the River Tyne in Northumberland. Newcastle has a large retail industry, positioning ninth in the UK’s overall retail centre expenditure. It is home to numerous shopping centres and is home to a number of branches of the UK’s biggest department stores.

Tracing the Charging Fault

The fault which was clearly electrical could be related to any number of parts so our engineer stocked his vehicle with a spare machine and numerous replacement parts before setting off North to Newcastle. As a large store in the city, the staff responsible for cleaning in the store need to be wary of the soiling that can be left behind due to high customer footfall. It is thus important for the staff to keep on top of scuffs and other marks in order to keep the store looking good and meeting the companies’ wider merchandising standards.

The machine they use for this purpose is a Viper Fang 24T battery-operated pedestrian scrubber-dryer and in this case, the customer had complained that the battery that powers the machine was no longer charging, preventing the machine from being used. When our engineer inspected the machine, he discovered that power was not going to the actual charging unit whatsoever.  Hence, the battery was unable to charge, therefore the charging fault must be in the power supply.

Our engineer started by checking the mains lead and when he opened up the plug, he discovered that someone had replaced the fuse, but in doing so, had fitted a 3 amp fuse, instead of the necessary 13 amp fuse. The Viper range of machines are very powerful and the charger needs a lot of current to fully charge its two large twelve volt batteries. The correct fuse was fitted into the plug, and after testing, the unit was charging again. Before signing off on the job, our engineer stressed the importance of ensuring that a qualified professional is used to carry out any electrical repairs on the floor cleaning machine.

Viper Fang 24 Battery Powered Pedestrian Scrubber Dryer

The Viper 24 scrubber-dryer is a robust machine and ideal for cleaning retail spaces. Measuring 141 x 66 x 100cm, it is housed in moulded plastic but its size means that it is durable whilst also being manoeuvrable. It is protected by front and rear collision protection and an impact-proof cover. It works in virtue of two tanks, one of which releases clean water and chemicals. The brushes then scrub the floor and the dirty water is sucked up as the machine moves over it, depositing the dirty water in the second tank. This makes it very simple to dispose of the dirty water, and the 66-litre tank means the user can spend less time emptying and more time cleaning. The customer was satisfied with the work carried out and our engineer was able to sign off on the job knowing he had left the customer with a fully-functional floor cleaning machine.
